There, There, There is no There Let’s say that you’re travelling on a high-speed train On a spinning planet that’s hard to explain You think you’re travelling yet you remain There, there, there is no there There’s no there there There’s no there there There’s no there there Let’s say you want to go somewhere You make all the arrangements with the utmost care Then, when you get there, you’re still here There, there, there is no there There’s no there there There’s no there there There’s no there there The only place that I can go The only I that I can see The place I go is only here The one I am is only me There, there, there is no there There’s no there there There’s no there there There’s no there there

Give Away my Turn The devil built his chapel in the shadow of the church Cause he likes the sound of a choir The merchant sold me apples for far less than their worth In baskets woven by children It's so easy to imagine I deserve it more But that's the root of the problem Oh, my earth, can I walk gently on you? Will I never learn to take just what I need? Will I never learn to give away my turn? And work for peace In the hangman's house, you don't talk of rope There's a ball of twine by the door Out on the Gulf, there's miles and miles of smoke And birds washed up on shore It's so easy to imagine this is not my fault But that's the root of the problem Oh, my earth, can I walk gently on you? Will I never learn to take just what I need? Will I never learn to give away my turn? And work for peace

Rodeo 03:41
Rodeo I got waterproof shoes, a big heavy overcoat, A gown in the closet and a skeleton or two An antique map from a pawn shop in Connecticut Some learned etiquette, I learned shampoo A three-point hat, a skirt made from a parachute, Got a watch that will chime if my heart skips a beat or two Travelling song for trumpet and a marching band A late night train out of Kalamazoo All that I really know how to do Is spend the afternoon like it was rain And I get to the rodeo Just as they fold the show Old friends from long ago Still know how to show Mercy, mercy, mercy I got drenched by the rain when my umbrella remained At the town laundromat after I left Duluth Got to hope just the same for sunshine or for rain All of my tickets take the roundabout route All that I really know how to do Is spend the afternoon like it was rain And I get to the rodeo Just as they fold the show Old friends from long ago Still know how to show Mercy, mercy, mercy

All Fall Down Burning wood in a drum Under a bridge Getting high Staying stoned Nothing left Empty bottles Broken bones You’re still our son That won’t change Want you to know Ice gets thin Wooden crosses Down that road And we all fall down We all fall down We all fall down We all fall down In this bloody town On the cold, cold ground We all fall down You go to her house Even though you know She moved to Toronto Her mother’s still there She’ll give you cigarettes She’ll ask you “Please just go." It’s not regret That we feel It’s something deeper In our bones Lost in the woods Night is falling Too far from home And we all fall down We all fall down We all fall down We all fall down In this bloody town On the cold, cold ground We all fall down You steal someone’s car And you drive The Northern Line Chasing trains And staying Out of your mind Will you go too far this time? Will you leave it all behind? Red flashing lights And the arms of a stranger And we all fall down We all fall down We all fall down We all fall down In this bloody town On the cold, cold ground We all fall down

A Brief History of the Foghorn In eighteen hundred and fifty-four Off the coast of Newfoundland A passing ship was New York bound But few on board would reach that ground In fog so thick, she lost all sight She was close to the coast but couldn’t see the light Full steam ahead with a crash like thunder Struck another ship and it took her under The loss of life weighed heavy on a man In the Bay of Fundy, he came up with a plan Tell ships at sea, “There’s danger down below!” When the light house fails, a horn bellows Foghorn Foghorn Foghorn Signal to sea Sailor take heed On the coast when the fog rolls in, and you’re Soaked to the bone, brine on your skin Can’t see port, can’t see starboard You long for the harbour Foghorn Foghorn Foghorn Signal to sea Sailor take heed Foghorn

Living Water 03:16
Living Water There’s a wild man in a desert land Preparing a way for the Lord Mustard seed planted under his feet Ground too dry to grow Woman at the well with her rope and pail At the gates of hell She tripped and fell Water poured down like stone Give me some of that living water I need it for my soul Living water quenches all my thirst Have mercy oh my Lord Jonah set sail in the belly of the whale Running away from the Lord Flower that bloomed withered too soon Hey, what did you do that for? Give me some of that living water I need it for my soul Living water quenches all my thirst Have mercy oh my Lord

Oh, Cecelia! 02:45
Oh, Cecelia! Cecelia, Waiting by the road just to be with you Once I might have been too proud But I’ve lost my hold on those reasons Lost my hold Cecelia, Nothing left except what I show you Got this far without looking back Wanting to be on the road with you Want to be on the road We hitch hiked west Out on Highway One You stood beside me In your pink t-shirt The one that says "Cape Breton Highlands National Park" Oh, Cecelia! Cecelia, That yellow jacket that trucker gave you. I knew you liked to push it hard But I didn't think it would get away from you Didn't think it’d get away We hitch hiked west Out on Highway One You stood beside me In your pink t-shirt The one that says "Cape Breton Highlands National Park"

Gospel Songs and Honky Tonks You're standing there in your worn blue jeans Been too long since I haven’t seen you, singing Gospel songs and honky tonks There's a crowd around you at the railway station Some for love, some for salvation Gospel songs and honky tonks I do the best I can with this old guitar This run-down car still gets me far, singing Gospel songs and honky tonks I’ve thought about you most every day Hoping things worked out in a good way Gospel songs and honky tonks Like an angel you appeared to me Spread your wings set me free It was a special love and we let it go Like an angel you appeared to me But we both know I’m not free It was a special love and we let it go When I hear those melodies I know you love me like a Gospel song in a honky tonk It's not about the money cause I’ll sing for free I'm doing what I love, what I believe Gospel songs and honky tonks You can step away but I hope you know Right down deep you're in my soul Gospel songs and honky tonks I caught my breath, didn’t think I’d feel This rush of love that feels so real Gospel songs and honky tonks I can’t stay, I got a family I got these folks depending on me They’re my gospel song, they’re my honky tonk Like an angel you appeared to me Spread your wings set me free It was a special love and we let it go Like an angel you appeared to me But we both know I’m not free It was a special love and we let it go When I hear those melodies I know you love me like a Gospel song in a honky tonk Like a gospel song in a honky tonk

Forest Fire 04:09
Forest Fire My dad was working horses I was bailing up the hay Saw smoke high up the mountain Ravens flew away We’d heard talk of some fires Farther west, near Logan Lake Smoke blew down the valley Made it hard to breathe That’s when we saw the fire Coming at us with full speed Dad said, “Help me load these horses And go and fetch your dog.” The valley that we came to Was too close to the blaze Dad looked in all directions Trying to find a way And that was the first time Ever saw him look afraid The fire kept coming closer And the rain stayed away The fire kept coming closer And the rain stayed away And now there’s only one road in And only one road out Dad double backed the mountain Found this logging road down south We drove through burnt up forests Ash in my hair, smoke in my mouth We saw barns burnt down to embers Creeks filled with debris As the darkness fell We finally got to some safety They helped us with the horses And brought water for the dog In the morning they were talking They said it would be days Before we could go back and see If anything was saved And that was the first time Ever saw my father pray The fire kept coming closer And the rain stayed away The fire kept coming closer And the rain stayed away

Hugh from Texas Linda and I hitched a ride with you Travelling west from Ontario Wanting to be free, just turned nineteen, Two of us out on the road We talked with you all through the miles Didn’t want that day to end You were real good to Linda and me You were there when we needed a friend Hugh from Texas, you were a friend You watched over us like our dads would have done And you gave us travelling advice Gave us something to eat and somewhere to sleep You knew we were travelling light You told us that life on the road is hard "A hard life but hey, no regrets.” You fixed us a ride when we had to turn back Hard to say goodbye to you then Hugh from Texas, you were a friend Linda paid for your coffee And that made you mad I played my guitar An old song and sad I’ll tell them all I knew you when Hugh from Texas, you were a friend Linda took up with a biker she met They got married not long after I made my way home cause I missed my dad I guess I was averting disaster I think of you Hugh out there on the road Hauling loads, end to end And I’m thanking you now for the kindness you showed You were there when we needed a friend Hugh from Texas, you were a friend Hugh from Texas, you were a friend

Evangeline 03:25
Evangeline Evangeline, We've been over and over this You know that I love you But I have to leave you now It's the in between Of the before and after you The things that I have to do Take me away from you If wishes filled fountains If kisses moved mountains If loving you more Could bring these walls tumbling down Evangeline, We've been over and over this You know that I love you But I have to leave you now When tomorrow comes I will be far away Both of us holding on To hearts that break If wishes filled fountains If kisses moved mountains If loving you more Could bring these walls tumbling down Evangeline, We've been over and over this You know that I love you But I have to leave you now

The Heart is the Last Thing to Go Got you a priest, you refused to speak Didn't feel like talking Ground beneath your feet opened to the deep No strength left for walking Pounding inside your chest Like angels breaking their chains The setting sun is like a golden rose The heart is the last thing to go Didn't speak to him for four long years Now he’s standing in your doorway You could take back all the cruel things you said But that would not be your way Watching you try to catch your breath While you pretend nothing's wrong The setting sun is like a golden rose The heart is the last thing to go He stayed with you all through that night Changed the sheets when you soaked through At the edge of the gossamer of life You let him get close to Maybe you’d been holding on The next day you were gone The setting sun is like a golden rose The heart is the last thing to go The setting sun is like a golden rose The heart is the last thing to go

about

RODEO is a delight: twelve songs that tick all the boxes of a truly great folk album: skillful songwriting, high-fidelity acoustic recording, traditional instruments played by top shelf talent, and the singular voice of a powerful singer.

Ingrid's lyrics can take us deep into heartbreak territory and listeners attuned to authenticity will find comfort here. RODEO reflects Ingrid's passion for the enduring strengths of folk music: narrative storytelling, singable choruses, and the association of songs with specific times and places, calling forth the Bay of Fundy, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and British Columbia’s Logan Lake, among others. Ingrid has an ear for character and snatches of dialogue complement her poetics. "It's a hard life but, hey, no regrets," a taciturn trucker quips in "Hugh from Texas".

Fundamentally, Ingrid is a folk singer who knows the value of entertainment. Her songs embrace the pleasure of a good melody, fleshed out with satisfying harmonies and up-tempo arrangements, giving us the feeling of a really good Saturday night dance at the local Legion Hall.

Producer Gavin Gardiner of All Day Coconut has captured an "in the room" vitality that is ideal for Ingrid's folk philosophy. The performance gestures of the musicians, the singer's intake of breath, the clack of a bow on the stand-up bass convey a refreshing realism and intimacy.

Gardiner (The Wooden Sky, Moonriivr) showcases his many talents on guitar, harmonica and Mellotron and lends the sweet gravitas of his voice for harmonies throughout the album. Gardiner is joined by folk powerhouses Chris Coole on banjo, John Showman on fiddle, and Ben Whiteley on stand-up bass. Bob Wiseman cameos for a keyboard solo. Stewart McKie provides deep baritone vocals on the duet he co-wrote with Ingrid, “Gospel Songs and Honky Tonks”.

Acknowledgements:
On her liner notes for RODEO, Ingrid has this to say: "A while back I set an intention to follow my voice wherever it would lead me: so first I want to say thank you to my voice for getting me to this beautiful rodeo. I really did take the roundabout route, but I met such wonderful people on the way I couldn’t have gone any faster."

Thank you, Gavin Gardiner, for everything you brought to the rodeo: your many gifts as a musician, singer, producer, and human being.

Thank you to the musicians who shared their talents so enthusiastically: Gavin Gardiner, Chris Coole, John Showman, Ben Whitely, Bob Wiseman and Stewart McKie.

Thank you, Blair Packham, Allister Bradley, and all the mentors of SongStudio for honing my song writing skills, and to my co-writers, especially Greg Kelly, Stewart McKie and Matt Gerber.

Thank you, Elisabeth Pomès for teaching me to sing.

Thank you to my wife Rita Fridella for loving me and loving to hear me sing. A very special thank you to Alex Napier for being an extraordinary listener and for giving me the gift that started us on the path of this recording.

ABOUT THE SONGS

The lead track is a full-on wall of bluegrass with a lighthearted lyric speculating that we are travelling on a high-speed train that travels but never arrives anywhere but here, in “There, There, There is no There”.

Those looking for folk anthem that meets the complexities of our times will find it in “Give Away My Turn,” an upbeat barn burner that asks deeper questions without pointing fingers, observing that we are all caught up in a system that compels us to take more than we need, “Will I never learn to take just what I need? Will I never learn to give away my turn?”

Title track “Rodeo” starts with a witty self assessment: “I got waterproof shoes, a big heavy overcoat, a gown in the closet and a skeleton or two” leading to a chorus where the melodic turns to a bittersweet plea for redemption, “I get to the rodeo just as they fold the show. Old friends from long ago still know how to show mercy”.

Unspooling like a movie told in three acts, parents struggle with their son’s self destructive path in “All Fall Down”.

A shipwreck off the coast of Newfoundland in 1854, inspires a lighthouse keeper in the Bay of Fundy to invent the foghorn. “A Brief History of the Foghorn” is a sea shanty caught inside the iron and steam bellows of a foghorn inspired melody.

Gutsy vocals and Gavin Gardiner’s spartan guitar give a new song the aura of being a cherished traditional in the spiritual “Living Water”.

The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is the quirky and uplifting chorus in a song about being on the road an unpredictable friend in “Oh, Cecelia!”

The deep baritone of co-writer Stewart McKie joins Ingrid in a duet about former lovers crossing paths long after their lives have taken different directions in this up-tempo delight, “Gospel Songs and Honky Tonks”.

A forest fire in the British Columbia interior forces a child and her father to evacuate with horses and a dog in “Forest Fire”. Lush with atmosphere, Gavin Gardiner lends harmonica and blends his plaintive vocals with Ingrid’s to tell the story of one family’s escape to safety.
In “Hugh from Texas”, two 19-year-old girls catch a ride with a crotchety trucker who watches over them “like their dads woulda done” in this high energy barrelhouse hoedown.

“Evangeline” gives heartbreak a new twist with an this folk classic.

A family reconciliation that happens “at the edge of the gossamer of life” is captured in Ingrid’s heart aching vocals in “The Heart is the Last Thing to Go”.
